MSP investigating Isabella inmate death

The Mount Pleasant Michigan State Police are investigating the death of jail inmate Bradford T. Gibson, 36, of East Orange, New Jersey, who died at the Isabella County Jail around 3 a.m. on September 24.
Gibson was arrested and lodged at the jail following an incident at the Wayside Central, where he was reportedly disturbing other patrons.
When asked to leave, he refused and Mt. Pleasant Police officers were called around 1:40 a.m. Gibson refused attempts by the officers to place him in custody, according to a September 28 release, and after a struggle with officers, a taser was used to subdue the man. He was charged with disorderly person, two counts of obstructing and resisting a police officer and aggravated assault on a police officer.
In a September 24 article posted online by Central Michigan Life, Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski is quoted saying, “There were no tasers used and no punches thrown. I have no idea what the cause of death will be (determined to be).” Thursday he said, “What I said was no taser was used at the jail. I wasn’t at the bar to know what happened there.”
Gibson was taken to the jail around 2 a.m. and placed in a holding cell. He was observed walking around and heard by other people in the jail. When corrections officers checked on him a little later, he was found unresponsive in the cell with no pulse. Emergency Medical Services were called to the jail around 3 p.m. Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful.
A Tuesday, September 27 Morning Sun article online said, “Gibson’s sister told friends she has photos depicting injuries to her brother’s face.”
It also reported that a childhood friend James Riley said “He had a gash on his head and his face was beaten beyond recognition. He should have had medical attention.”
The MSP release Wednesday said Gibson had not suffered any apparent trauma. It isn’t known if he had any medical issues.
An autopsy has been conducted at Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids. Cause of death has not yet been determined.
