Clare and Farwell compete at golf districts – Pioneers advance to reigonals
On a day with less than ideal playing conditions, Clare and Farwell’s golf teams competed in district action on Friday, June 1 at Pinconning’s Maple Leaf Golf Course. The Pioneers shot a 375 to take fifth place, which moves them on to regionals. Farwell shot a 381 to come in eighth place, missing out on advancing to the next round.
“The rain was coming down sideways,” Clare head coach Chris Fedewa said. “Everybody that was there shot 30 strokes worse than they normally do. It was just horrible. We managed to grind it out. I don’t know how but we barely snuck in there. Clubs were flying out of people’s hands, it was that bad.”
Patrick Church was Clare’s top finisher with a 90 to come in 15th, Jarrett Anderson shot a 91 to come in 16th, Zack Brockway carded a 94 to come in 20th, Justin Lemke hit a 100 to place 36th and John Myers shot a 115 to come in 55th.
“Church has been the mainstay of the golf team his four years here,” Fedewa said. “He did a great job of just grinding out the weather. Brockway is a freshmen so that’s the first time he’s been put under that pressure. He did a great job.”
Farwell was led by Nicholas Saupe, Gregory Saupe and Keith Campbell all hitting carding a 95 to tie for 22nd, Sean Robison shot a 96 to come in 27th and Taylor Larabee shot a 97 to come in 31st.
Clare continued its season on Thursday at the Glen Brier Golf Course in Perry, eying a top two finish to advance to the state finals.
“Now it gets really tough real quick,” Fedewa said. “We’re going to go down there and do our best and try to do as well as we can. We have to play great but it’s always good going to the next level. You can’t argue with the fact that we moved on and did what we had to do to get there.”
