Clare softball falls in district championship
The Clare varsity softball team fell to host Pinconning 5-3 in Monday’s division three district championship game, with the hosting Spartans scoring three late runs to pull off the win.
“It was tough (to lose) but I thought we played well,” Clare head coach Jeff Albert said. “Pinconning was definitely a good team. We were right with them until the end. It was a good softball game. A tough one to lose, but that’s just the way it goes.”
In the top of the first inning, Ashley Petree had an RBI double and Haley Smith had an RBI single to put Clare up 2-0, though Pinconning tied the game in its half of the inning. The Spartans broke the tie with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Courtney English belted a home run in the top of the sixth inning to cut the gap to 5-3 but Clare was unable to touch the plate again.
Petree suffered the loss, pitching five and 2/3 innings, giving up five runs, four earned on two hits, three striekouts and three walks.
Katya Hofmann pitched one and 1/3 innings, striking out one batter and walking two.
Lindsay Winter and Melissa Benchley added singles to help the Clare offense.
Clare opened the day with a 3-0 win over Farwell, with Hofmann picking up the seven inning win. Hofmann finished with 10 strikeouts, four walks and gave up two hits.
“She pitched well for us, that helped us defensively,” Albert said. “We got hits when we needed to.”
Benchley had three hits in the game, Petree and Erica Packard both had hits with Winter and Benchley adding an RBI apiece.
Kate Saupe took the loss for Farwell, with Carol White and Hannah Reeger getting the Lady Eagles’ lone hits in the contest.
Clare finishes its season 28-10.
“We had a tough schedule, to come out 28-10 says a lot for the players,” Albert said. “Every single game, whether we lost or won they were in it 100 percent. That’s all you can ask for. We are going to miss our seniors but we have a lot coming back next year.”
