Mid Michigan Community College has awarded its annual President’s Scholarships. This prestigious scholarship is awarded to the student attending MMCC with the highest Grade Point Average from each in-district school. Cassaday Shea (Beaverton), Josie Ellis (Gladwin), Abigail Bothwell (Clare), Harris Schuab (Farwell), Jennifer Elliott (Harrison), and Sierra Lamphier (Harrison) will each receive a $2,000 scholarship for the upcoming academic year at MMCC. “We’re honored to recognize these students for their outstanding academic achievements,” said Carol Churchill, MMCC President. “It’s so important for high school students to look ahead and prepare for college. Vandals hit the Colonville home of Jaimey Montague around 3 a.m. According to Clare County Sheriff John Wilson, Montague reported that “what sounded like five to ten suspects” threw fireworks at his home and spread toilet paper throughout the yard. He said the suspects left in a vehicle headed towards Clare. Wilson said the incident is still under investigation and no further information is available.

A black bear was spotted near the southeast corner of Silver Lake (Silver Lake Drive at Browns Board) on Saturday, June 30. Reportedly it is the first one spotted in that area according to Tamara McCaslin, who emailed the picture to the Review.

Seth Geroux, charged in February with Unlawful Driving Away of a Motor Vehicle, Malicious Destruction of Personal Property $200-$1,000, and Operating Without a License, all as a habitual 4th offender, was sentenced to prison July 2. Geroux pled guilty June 4 to Unlawful driving Away a Motor Vehicle as a habitual 2nd offender. He was sentenced by 55th Circuit Court Judge Thomas Evans to imprisonment for 18 months to seven years and six months. He did not receive credit for time served because he was on parole at the time of the recent offences, Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis reported. [...]
Velma Beattie, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother passed away on July 9, 2012 at the age of 102. Velma was born the daughter of Perry and Mary Smith on November 9, 1909 in Lapeer County. She was united in marriage to Maynard I. Beattie in 1928; with him predeceasing her in 1986. Velma attended Lapeer High School, Lapeer County Normal and Eastern Michigan University. She taught in Oakland and Lapeer County Public Schools, retiring in 1969.
