Knights of Columbus Council #3209 donated $1,700 raised from their Tootsie Roll Drive to the Clare-Gladwin Area School. K of C representative Jim Mishler presented a check to Area School students and Principal Mike Simon last week. Simon said the donation will be used toward field trips, playground improvements, cooking activities, and to bring in presenters for student programs. “It was great to receive the funds and we are so grateful for their generosity,” he said.
Clare High School has expanded three of its programs designed to improve student success. All three programs were in effect last year and have resulted in more student achievement. The Net Connect Program began last year to address the fact that only seventy percent of CHS students report having Internet access at home. Of those who do, some have only dial-up access. The 1958 Piper Tri-Pacer that belonged to Clark A. Reynolds, who died suddenly two years ago, is being donated by his widow and family to Northwestern Michigan College’s Aviation Program. Sandra Campbell, long-time supporter of the Clare County CROP Hunger Walk, was chosen by the committee and recruiters to be the 2012 Grand Marshall for their walk. The Clare County CROP Hunger Walk will start from St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Clare, on Sunday, September 30. Registration for the two and one-half mile walk starts at 1:30 p.m. and the walk at 2 p.m. Sandra and her husband, Fred, along with Pastor Brian Coleman and wife Marjorie, began the CROP Walk in this area in 1985. The Clare varsity soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Leroy Pine River on Thursday, Sept. 20 in Northern Michigan Soccer League action. The Pioneers led 1-0 at the half on a goal by Hunter Seering and assist by Brock Demo, but the Buck’s scored goals off the feet of Schroeder Vanderhoof and Nate Millen to pick up the win. Clare goalkeeper Eric Litke had 14 saves in goal. The Pioneers also lost at Houghton Lake 5-0 on Tuesday, in another NMSL game.
