Crop Walk honors Curtis Murton
The Clare County CROP Hunger Walk will be a memorial walk to honor Curt Murton for his work in the community, in education, and in the CROP Hunger Walk. The walk to help overcome hunger will be held on Sunday, September 30, 1:30 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Clare, Michigan.
Curtis S. Murton, Jr., passed away at age 80 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor on May 12, 2012. He was born to Curtis and Leota Murton in Lansing, Michigan on August 3, 1931. He was graduated with a BS degree in Geography and a Masters in Higher Education from U of M. Murton also completed a PhD in Higher Education from MSU. For most of his adult life he worked in higher education. He taught at Port Huron Community College in Port Huron, MI and Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI. He served as Dean of Financial Affairs, Dean of Instruction, and was one of the founders of Mid Michigan Community College in Harrison, MI.
Murton served in higher education out of state as Dean of Academic Affairs at Broward Community College in Davie, FL. He served as President at Brainerd Community College in Brainerd, MN and Brookhaven Community College in Farmer’s Branch, TX.. Murton is survived by his wife Jane (Bicknell) and 5 children, Mark, Scott, Gail, John, and Lynn, and three granddaughters.
Murton began helping in the Clare CROP Walk with his wife Jane, who is the walk recruiter for her church, has been Coordinator for the walk, and is now Arrangements Chairperson. CROP Walkers will remember his ready smile, and his willingness to help out with multiple details of the walk, especially announcements, drawing for prizes, and taking pictures. The Murtons also ran hot dog sales to help cover expenses. Committee, recruiters and walkers have expressed that he will be missed!

There will be prizes and drawings, and a light lunch will be available both before and after the walk. Walkers raising $150 to help people in need will be awarded a pin furnished by Church World Service (CWS). Twenty-five percent of the money raised will be divided between Clare County Food Pantry, Clare County Baby Pantry, and Love, INC (food pantries). The remainder of the funds raised will go where needed in 80 countries (including the U.S.) through Church World Service. CWS is an ecumenical ministry of 37 Christian denominations and communions working in partnership to eradicate hunger and poverty, and to promote peace and justice around the world.
