A 63-year-old Lincoln Township man is in a Bay City Hospital for a mental evaluation after he stole a car around noon Tuesday from J&D Market on Jefferson Avenue near Bertha Lake and led police on a chase that ended on the north side of Clare.
According to an employee at J&D Market, the man was a regular customer. “I don’t know why he would have done that,” she said. She said the car he took belonged to J&D Market owner Irene Reusser, who had come inside the store after filling the Buick Rendezvous with gas.
A release from Clare County Sheriff John Wilson’s office said the man got into the car and drove away. The store employee said Store Manager Kris Hendrickson called the Clare County Central Dispatch around 12:13 p.m. Tuesday to report the stolen vehicle.
Deputy Ryan Schmidt spotted the stolen vehicle on Surrey Road near Harrison Avenue a few minutes later and attempted to stop the suspect. After the chase continued for another ten miles the vehicle ran over stop sticks placed by a Clare City Sergeant. The vehicle continued on for about another mile, pulling into the Speedway Gas Station on the north side of Clare with two flat tires.
The suspect then rammed two police cars who were trying to block him in before he was arrested and taken to the hospital.
No injuries were reported and a report has been filed with the Clare County Prosecutor, according to the CCSD press release.
