Clare skiers win easily at jamboree
The Clare Pioneer Ski Team took first place at the Central Alpine Ski Conference Harrison Jamboree on Tuesday. Both teams won comfortably – the boys’ team won by 73 points while the girl’s led by 45 points. The Clare teams are leading in the CASC.
The Pioneer men were consistent; Brett Acton placed first place in both slalom and giant slalom, Jeffrey Staten placed second in both, followed by Zack Brockway placing third in both events, and Charlie Bugbee placing fourth in both events. Jordan Hales took 6.5 place in slalom and eighth in giant slalom. Timmy Badour took the ninth place spot in slalom, and Ryan Whiteman came in sixth place in giant slalom.
Maggie Merillat captured the first place spot in both slalom and giant slalom for the ladies, followed by Madi Cleary taking second place in both events. In slalom, Leah Bugbee took seventh place followed by Hannah Hofweber in tenth. In giant slalom, Sierra Kwiatowski took fourth place followed by Bugbee in sixth, Hofweber in tenth, and Alise Cronin in thirteenth place.
On the previous Friday, the Pioneers attended the Elk Rapids Traverse City Invitational and competed against some of the top ski teams in the state. The boys’ team came in second place and the girls’ team took seventh.
With only a handful of races left for the Pioneers, Coach Jann Cleary says, “We’ve had a lot of success so far, but the skiers are still focused on the upcoming racing. They want to stay strong and finish strong.”
Clare skiers race next on Friday at the Grayling Invitational at Schuss Mountain.
