A 26-year-old Harrison man, Andrew Allen Sanderson, was arrested Wednesday evening and arraigned in 80th District Court Thursday afternoon on charges of child torture, child abuse 1st degree and domestic assault.
Wednesday morning Clare County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to MidMichigan Medical Center – Clare Emergency in connection with a 17 month old boy, who had been assaulted.
Investigation showed that the youngster had multiple injuries to all areas of his body. He was transferred by ambulance to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw for further treatment.
Sanderson was arrested that same evening for the assault against the baby and for domestic assault against the youngster’s mother, Brook Crow.
Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said Thursday afternoon, “Andrew Allen Sanderson, 26, of Harrison was arraigned today on the following charges:
Count 1: Torture: Did, with the intent to cause cruel or extreme physical or mental pain and suffering, inflict great bodily injury or severe mental pain or suffering upon [the victim], a 17-month old person within his or her custody or physical control; contrary to MCL 750.85
Count 2: Child Abuse – First Degree: Did knowingly or intentionally cause serious physical harm to [the victim], 17-months old, a child; contrary to MCL 750.136b(2)
Count 3: Domestic Violence, 2nd Offense: Did, make an assault or an assault and battery upon Brooke Crow, a resident or former resident of his household, or an individual with whom he had a dating relationship; contrary to MCL 750.81(2) and (3)
His bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety. Conditions if he were to be released on bond were no contact with Brooke Crow or the child, no weapons (firearms or otherwise), Mental Health Evaluation before release, and electronic monitoring.
Ambrozaitis said, “While I cannot relate specifics about this case, I think it is important that the community is made aware that these types of crimes occur in our county. It is not uncommon for us to have multiple cases against a particular defendant for battering his/her spouse or significant other. And, it is also not uncommon that the perpetrator of the abuse against the children is generally the mother’s boyfriend.”
The prosecutor said Sanderson was on bond when he committed the offenses. He was out on bond in connection with charges of Domestic Violence 2nd offense and Malicious Use of a Telephone to Threaten. “The victim in that file was also Brooke Crow.” She added. “His bond conditions in this file ordered him not have any contact with her while the case was pending. The Court arraigned him on the bond violation in this file, resetting his bond at $5,000.00 cash/surety/10% on this file only.”
A preliminary examination for the new charges will be set within 14 days from today’s date, Ambrozaitis said. “His next court appearance in the case is February 6 for a final pretrial conference.”
