Clare baseball sweeps Farwell 10-8, 8-2

Clare took out host Farwell in its baseball season opener Monday night, topping the Eagles 10-0 (six innings) and 8-2 in a Jack Pine Conference doubleheader.
“It was a great day to play a doubleheader,” Clare head coach Skeet Colosky said. “You could see that it was early in the season, we have room to improve, overall good start. Our defense played well and we had two great outings by Hunter Ruby and Colton Punches.”
Ruby picked up the win in game one, giving up one hit in six innings of work while fanning 11 batters and walking one. Farwell used five pitchers in the game, with Austin Hickey striking out three batters.
Punches led the Clare offense with three hits and an RBI, Garrett Jenkins had two hits, with Charlie Bugbee, James Baer, Logan Emery and Ruby all adding one hit apiece. Jenkins and Ruby both had one double and Punches added three stolen bases.
Farwell’s lone hit came off the bat of Curtis Robinson.
Punches pitched all seven innings of game two to earn the win, giving up two earned runs on three hits, 15 strikeouts and four walks.
The Eagles used three pitchers in game two, with Robsinson striking out two batters in two innings of work.
Clare had hits by Bugbee, Baer, Matthew Magnus, Emery, Ruby and Brock Swan with Magnus adding two RBI.
Farwell’s hits came off the bats of Trent Marhofer, Noah Wilson and Devin Warner, with Marhofer and Wilson getting credit with one RBI apiece.
Clare (2-0) hosted Roscommon on Thursday, hosts its own invitational on Saturday and hosts Beaverton on Tuesday.
Farwell also played at Valley Lutheran on April 17, earning a 5-3 victory.
Jacob Sutton pitched five innings to earn the win, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, four strikeouts and three walks.
Dylan Brown led the Farwell offense with three hits, Wilson had two hits and an RBI, Walter Mosby had two hits and an RBI and Marhofer added one hit and an RBI.
The second game was canceled, due to thunderstorms.
Farwell (1-2, 0-2) hosted Houghton Lake on Thursday and play at Gladwin on Tuesday.
