Burbank completes Early College

Kirsten Burbank was honored by the Farwell Board of Education last Monday evening for her successful completion of the Early College Program.
After completion of her thirteenth year of school and earning over 60 college credits, Kirsten has graduated and is well on her way to securing a Business Degree from Lake Superior State University.
The Early College Program, entering its second year of implementation, has proven to be a highly valuable asset to the students of Farwell High School and their parents. Beginning in their junior year, students who sign up for the program have the opportunity to earn credits that apply toward a two-year college degree while still in high school. By adding a fifth year of study to their curriculum, students have the potential to complete an Associate’s Degree by the time they graduate from high school. The program is offered to juniors and seniors at Farwell High School at no cost to students or their families.
“Going into this program was kind of scary at first,” admitted Burbank. “I had no idea what college was going to be like. But knowing I had my friends and family in Farwell to come home to for help made it a great experience. Mrs. Lentovich and our English professor Mr. Adams gave me all the help I needed. I succeeded and got my degree and now I will be starting classes at Lake Superior State this fall.”
According to Burbank, the advisors at LSSU were very impressed with the fact that she had accumulated so many college credits while still in high school. Burbank says that when she begins college life in the fall, she will still be considered a freshman despite the number of credits already earned.
“Even though I will enter as a freshman, I will be able to graduate with my business degree long before the other freshmen because I took advantage of this program,” related Burbank.
Morgan Coney, another student who took full advantage of the Early College Program, graduated from Farwell High School this past week with a completed Associate’s Degree.
