Haggart named new Clare Athletic Director

Former Athletic Director Dan Haggart will be “on the job” again for the coming school year.
Haggart was one of more than 30 applicants to fill the position of former AD Jack Kramer and was recommended for the position by Superintendent Doniel Pummell at Monday’s board meeting.
He was the AD and Attendance Administrator for Clare High School from July of 2000 to June of 2004. Since then he has been a Substitute Teacher for the Clare-Gladwin Regional Education Service District from 2004 to 2008 and for Willsub from 2008 to 2013. He also did his student teaching at Clare High School in 1999.
He has an Associate of Arts and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Northwood University, is a graduate from Saginaw Valley State University with a major in Social Studies and a minor in Mathematics, and has a Masters from Central Michigan University in Educational Administration – School Principalship.
The Board of Education voted 5-2 Monday evening to hire Haggart for the AD position. Carol Santini and Steve Stark voted against hiring him.
Following a budget hearing, the board unanimously approved the proposed $13.4 million budget for the coming school year.
The total is down nearly $500,000 from the final budget for 2012-13, and will use about $289,000 of the fund balance leaving $866,820 in the balance at the beginning of the school year and $577,577 in the fund by next June.
The proposed budget shows a reduction in basic programs and added needs and an overall reduction in supporting Services.
The budget also shows a slight increase in revenues for the coming year.
The board also voted unanimously to purchase two new 77 passenger busses for the school fleet. The board previously approved the transfer of $85,000 from the Capital Expenditure Fund toward the purchase. The board authorized District Finance Director Lynn Graham to check with local banks on financing and enter into a purchase agreement with one or with Sovereign Bank to pay off the busses over the next three years.
Board member Richard Shively also gave his official resignation from the board at the meeting. He said he is unable to devote the time to the board business that he believes is necessary. He has been on the board for the past ten years and was reelected to the seat three times. Board President Tom Weaver said he will be missed on the board.
Superintendent Pummell reported on the progress on the Brookwood football field renovation, which is now in progress. She said Bolle Contractors had donated all of the excavating to remove the grass from the field in preparation for the installation of the new turf this summer. She also said the committee had recently received a $60,000 donation to the project, which may be used for additional bleachers.
Other business at the meeting Monday evening included:
*Approval of budget amendments to the 2012-13 budget.
* A Sports Boosters Report from Denny Carmoney on a “very successful season and a total of nearly $500,000 given back to the schools by the organization.
*Band Boosters President Jill Ouellette reported that the new uniforms for the band were used in the Memorial Day parade. Fundraising efforts are now underway to purchase rain jackets and technology.
*The board approved participation in the Michigan High School Athletic Association for High School and Middle School sports programs.
*The board approved borrowing $2 million in anticipation of State Aid through the Michigan Municipal Bond Authority.
