Clare Police Chief Brian Gregory said police responded to a 911 call September 7 around 9 p.m. Within seconds of the call, officers arrived and found the assault in progress.
Gregory said, “She heard someone outside yelling and screaming and went to the door to see what was going on. When she opened the door he pushed his way into the apartment.” Allegedly he began choking her and assaulting her, Gregory said.
Bishop was arrested at the scene after attempting to flee and taken to the Clare County Jail where he was charged on two felony counts.
The victim was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center where she was treated and released.
Bishop, who Gregory said was homeless, was arraigned September 9th in 80th District Court by Magistrate Karen Willing on one felony count of Home Invasion first degree; and on one felony count of Assault by Strangulation. Both counts carry a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.
His bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety/10 percent. His first scheduled preliminary examination is set for September 23.
Gregory said the case is still under investigation.
