Clare grad dies in motorcycle crash

Charlene Valletta, 24, of St. Clair Shores, and formerly of Clare and Farwell, was a passenger on the motorcycle. Both she and the driver died as a result of the crash, police said. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
Police said the motorcycle driver, a 36-year-old Warren man, formerly of Westland, lost control and crashed into freeway overpass fencing in an attempt to exit eastbound Interstate 696 at 11 Mile Road.
The driver died at the scene from massive head injuries. Valletta was taken to an area hospital, also with massive head injuries, and died there later.
Police said they believe the motorcycle attempted to leave the freeway at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a curve in the ramp. The motorcycle crashed head-on into the barricade.
It was not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
