Harrison woman badly burned in house fire

A house fire early Wednesday morning destroyed a Hayes Township home and critically injured 30-year old Jodi Mata.
The fire happened at 3067 Melanie Lane, Harrison at 12:00 a.m. September 18. The home is just north of the Harrison City limits just north of Townline Lake Road and is owned by Keith Cornell.
According to a release from Clare County Undersheriff Dwayne Miedzianowski, “Emergency responders found the house engulfed and the two occupants, [Mata and Cornell] outside the home.”
Mata was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center-Clare by ambulance with severe burns and transferred to Butterworth in Grand Rapids. She was reported to be in stable condition according to information posted on Facebook by her boyfriend Donald Smith and reports by friend Kristen Hileman.
Hileman said Mata had “third degree burns over most of her body, especially on her arms and hands.” She also said Mata’s two cats were lost in the fire.
There is an online fundraiser for Mata at youcaring.com. $1,872 had already been raised at press time.
Harrison Fire Chief Pat Agin said the building was “heavily involved” when the department arrived. Fire personnel were on the scene until 2:45 a.m., he said The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he added.
