Edwin Simpson, 42, a Federal inmate from southern Michigan being housed at the Clare County Jail, died Monday after he used his sheet to hang himself at the jail September 12.
Sheriff John Wilson said Simpson was discovered in his cell around 4:30 p.m. by officers after another inmate notified them. Corrections staff immediately initiated CPR and Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service was summoned and continued treatment.
Simpson was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center – Clare where he was listed in critical condition.
“On September 16 we were informed that he had passed away early in the morning hours,” the release from Wilson said. Simpson was incarcerated at the County Jail for three weeks on drug offense charges. He was in-transit pending prison time, Wilson said in a phone interview Wednesday. “We would like to express condolences to family and friends during this sad time.”
