Harrison falls to Beaverton, 34-22
Homecoming night didn’t translate into a win on Friday, as Harrison fell to Beaverton 34-22.
“The kids are trying hard but injuries are really hurting us,” Harrison head coach Mike Petrongelli said.
The Beavers struck for the first score of the night in the Jack Pine Conference football contest on a 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to put them up 7-0 early.
The Hornets responded with a 22-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion pass from Justin Yager to Trent Searight to pull ahead 8-7.
The lead would be short lived however, as the Beavers scored two more touchdowns before the half. The first came on a seven yard touchdown run and the second came on 25-yard interception returned for a touchdown.
Already leading 21-6 at the half Beaverton added scores on a pair of short touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to lead 34-6.
Harrison scored on two long touchdowns in the game’s final minutes, first getting a 61-yard touchdown run by Wilson and then getting a 37-yard touchdown pass from Yager to Wilson. Justice Walraven ran in the two-point conversion after Wilson’s run, but a pass on the two-point attempt after the touchdown pass made the final 34-22.
Josh Wilson finished with 100 yards on six carries, Matt Haskell ran for 30 yards on six tries and Yager had five carries for 28 yards.
Yager also finished two-of-nine passing for 39 yards and one touchdown but also threw two interceptions. Wilson had one catch for 37 yards and Searight had one catch for two yards.
Jerrod Given made 19 tackles, Bret Coughlin had 11, Yager and Michael Taylor both brought down eight.
Harrison (1-5 overall, 1-4 JPC) hosts Clare (4-2, 4-0) tonight (Friday). The Pioneers are coming off a 34-0 win over Farwell last week. Clare earned a 24-7 win in last year’s match-up between the two teams.
“Clare is improving and we will have to play a great game,” Petrongelli said. “We must stop making big mistakes at the wrong time.”
