Marker gets TLC
The Clare County Historical Society and Friends of Clare County Parks & Recreation teamed up recently to add a little soap, water and elbow grease to the Michigan Historical Marker at the roadside park on Old 27 south of Harrison . The marker, installed back in 1957, was showing its age with both the sign’s text and graphic hard to see. Although the marker will eventually need to be refinished (a $1,500 job that local organizations will need to finance), the maintenance done this fall should help the marker last several more years.
If you are one of those who have never read this marker that talks about Clare County’s contribution to the logging industry, fall is a beautiful time to visit little roadside park with its old-fashion hand pump, a quiet stream and a picnic area. And now, thanks to the Historical Society and Friends, the park is a bit more visitor-friendly.
