Mike’s Musings– Do you need help?
Michael Wilcox- Publisher/Editor
We got a call a couple of days ago from residents at Sleepy Hollow Apartments in Harrison. Several senior citizen/wheelchair bound residents had been without heat for 10 days, so they claimed. In following up with the call we learned the management company, GLD, had ordered a part to fix a boiler which had quit working . The part came in earlier, but, we are told, it apparently was the wrong part. So now it had to be re-ordered.
In the meantime, these older residents were freezing. A couple went out and bought electric space heaters, but with the temperatures dipping down to the teens, it was a dangerous situation. When ace reporter Pat Maurer heard of their plight she called Lori Ware, who is in charge of Senior Services for Clare County. Lori immediately investigated the situation and made sure the residents were warm and toasty for Thanksgiving.
I bring this up because the Clare County REVIEW and Marion PRESS are about to kick off their Christmas Wish program. We are asking those that find themselves or family in a dire situation- like no heat, or shelter, or food, or clothes, to write us a letter and explain in graphic detail why you need help.
We in turn will take the best letters to area businesses, who will provide money and donations to see that your Christmas Wish is fulfilled. We’ve helped literally hundreds of families in the past, and it is our intention this year, to help more people and families than in any year since the inception of the program.
Those letters in the past have motivated us to find an apartment for a homeless couple, purchase a gravestone for a distraught wife, provide a vehicle and gas money for a family to travel downstate for Christmas; as well as provide countless dinners, articles of clothing and thousands of toys for children in our communities.
If you, a loved one, or a friend has had a particular rough year and one like to make your holiday season a little more cheerful give us a shout by writing a letter and sending it to the Clare County REVIEW at 105 W. Fourth St., Clare, Mi. 48617, or email to firstname.lastname@example.org OR The Marion PRESS at Box D, Marion, Mi. 49665, or email email@example.com. Deadline for all letters is December 12.
I WOULD BE REMISS if I didn’t publicly acknowledge The Marion PRESS Office Manager, Carol Cope, who is mourning the loss of her significant other, Don Knight. Don, an avid car buff, hunter, and fisherman passed away Monday morning with Carol at his side, after a long bout with cancer.
As many of you know, Carol has been the public face of The Marion PRESS, for several years. I have gotten to know her very well since purchasing the PRESS in December of last year, and quite honestly have never met a more genuine, happy and hardworking lady than Carol.
So if you missed Carol’s bright, shining face at the PRESS office, be aware it’s for good reason. She will be back soon, but in the meantime, I think I can speak for all those that come in contact with you, we offer our sincerest condolences.
