CCCF awards welding grant
The Clare County Community Foundation recently awarded Mid Michigan Community College a $3,500 grant, which will be used to purchase new welding equipment for the college’s Morey Technical Center, currently under construction in Mt. Pleasant.
Over 31% of the Clare County students who attend MMCC attend classes in Mt. Pleasant. In light of the large number of Clare County residents who will be served, the grant fit well with the Clare County Community Foundation’s mission to strengthen its community by providing leadership, fostering collaboration on local needs and issues, and encouraging a legacy of giving through grants, scholarships, and events.
“We’re grateful to the Clare County Community Foundation for their ongoing support of efforts like these that encourage growth and workforce development for the mid-Michigan area,” remarked Matt Miller, VP of Student and Community Relations.
MMCC’s new Morey Technical Center will complete the development of a comprehensive campus in Mt. Pleasant that mirrors the services offered at the college’s Harrison location.
Responding to the demand identified repeatedly by area manufacturers for trained employees, the design of the tech center was carefully engineered with flexible spaces that will serve present and future training needs in basic and advanced manufacturing principles and technologies. While there will be dedicated areas for welding and computer aided drafting, other areas are open and meant to respond to short-term training needs.
The $3.4 million project is evidence of MMCC’s ongoing commitment to meeting vital workforce development needs in the central Michigan area. It will be principally funded through private contributions, and to date, over 60% of the needed funds have been raised.
This funding progress, along with the critical need for the facility, motivated MMCC to move forward with site work and construction in the fall of 2013, with completion of the center expected in late-summer 2014.
