Mittens for Michigan donation
Flora Howey, 79, of Lake has been making mittens, hats and scarves for the past 20 years. In the past ten months she has finished 101 pairs of mittens along with assorted scarves and hats, all for needy kids. Friday she kicked off the Mittens for Michigan drive at Chemical Bank in Farwell with the donation. Shown on the right with the table full of goodies, she presented the donation to Loretta Wischmeyer, Branch Manager of Chemical Bank in Farwell. It is an early gift, said Wischmeyer, since the drive officially starts November 16. “I wanted to let everyone know how wonderful, fantastic it is that she does this for youngsters,” she said. Howey said she learned how to crochet when she was 15 and has been doing it ever since. “I taught my mother, and my husband’s grandmother,” she said. “I used to make all kinds of things. Now I stick to potholders, mittens, hats and scarves.” For five years she donated all she made to Toys for Tots.
