Clare police arrest Coleman man after struggle

On 11-04-09 at approximately 6:00 p.m. Clare City Police Officers responded to a report of a possible robbery at the Clare Party Store. 

 

The Clare Police Department K9 Division was involved in locating the suspect in a wooded area west of the store.  The suspect was not compliant with demands to surrender himself, and a struggle ensued involving the police K9.  After being taken into custody the suspect was examined at the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center in Clare for any possible injuries. 

 

 A Clare City Police officer was also treated at the hospital for minor injuries, and both were released from the hospital later in the evening. The suspect, a Matthew Leis age 39 of Coleman, was lodged in the Clare County Jail and charged with Attempted Malicious Destruction of Police Property, Resisting and Obstructing Police, and Retail Fraud.  Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to have been a factor in the incident. Clare City Police were assisted by the Michigan State Police- Mt. Pleasant Post and Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service.

 

On 11-05-09 Leis was arraigned in 80th District Court on the charges and his bond was set at $25,000 cash. He remains lodged in the Clare County Jail.
