Hunter shoots self in foot

A Houghton Lake man was injured last Saturday in Clare County when the gun he was hunting with discharged and hit him in the ankle.

According to a press release from the Clare County Sheriff’s Department, Charles Reed, 62, was hunting near his hunting cabin in Redding Township when the accident happened. Reportedly Reed was attempting to lift his firearm into a tree stand using a line attached to the gun’s trigger guard when the weapon discharged and hit him in the foot.

The accident happened near the intersection of cook Avenue and Mostetler Road about 200 yards from Reed’s cabin. Reed used his cell phone to call for help and was taken to Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center in Clare by United rescue Ambulance. He was later transferred to Hurley Hospital in Flint for further treatment, according to Clare County Sheriff John Wilson.

Wilson said the accident is still under investigation.
