MMCC students bring home awards

Students and advisors from Mid Michigan Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently attended the organization’s Regional Convention where officers were elected and regional awards were presented.

Two students from MMCC’s chapter were elected to Michigan Region Offices.  James Doub, of Mt. Pleasant, was elected as the Michigan Region President and Danae Berry, of Gladwin, was elected the Michigan Region Public Relations/Historian. One of their duties will be to travel to some of the other 31 chapters in the Michigan Region to speak at Induction Ceremonies and Orientations, participate in events, and network with chapter members.

To receive this honor, each candidate was first required to give a speech and answer questions.  They also campaigned at a political rally to greet members and voting delegates.

Awards for the chapters were also presented during the convention.  MMCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa won a number of awards including the Chapter Milestone Award, the Paragon Advisor Award, the Five Star Chapter Development Award, and the Pop Tab Collection Certificate.  Individually, Danae Berry won the prestigious Mike Sherman Candidate Award.

The student members also worked on a project to present at the convention.  They were challenged to turn recycled materials into something useful for the Trash to Treasure project.  The chapter won second place for their dorm room built out of recycled materials.

“The benefit of this project was that we were able to take the trash in our community and make it into a treasure for us,” said Hillary Denslow, Chapter Vice President and project chairperson.  “We learned how to be open to one another’s ideas, not turning anything down until we fully thought it through and determined what would work best.”

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society encourages the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming.  Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1,100 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan.

“We as Phi Theta Kappans are expected to be student leaders,” said James Doub, MMCC’s Phi Theta Kappa President.  “It was wonderful to be around so many positive people who are committed to a brighter future.”
