Bits and Pieces

Pat’s Bits & Pieces- Marvelous muddy March is here!!

Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent Today is possibly my favorite day of the whole year. Oh, it isn’t my birthday, anniversary or any special day at all. It is just the first day of the month that is hinting that winter weather might soon be over. February, the longest month of the year is finally over again and it will be eleven months before it rolls around again. Call me Pollyanna (only those of you in my age bracket will have the slightest idea what that means…) but I am looking forward to the next eight of those months! March, the [...]

Pat’s Bits & Pieces- Be extra careful out there!

Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent I am tired of talking about the weather and I am sure you are tired of hearing about it, so guess I will write this week’s column about one of the effects of it. I’m talking about people – including myself – falling on the ice. I don’t ever remember so many people saying they had fallen until this year.  I managed to fall under the bird feeder Monday and ended up spending about three hours at a very busy emergency room waiting for the x-rays to come back to see if anything was broken. Pat’s Bits & Pieces- OMG – It’s still February

Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent Well it is, but it’s now officially half over. If you haven’t guessed, I’m talking about February again and now there’s only 13 more days to make it through. And haven’t we had some wild weather this month? Rain, snow, ice, more rain, more snow, more ice…only the kids are loving this – they’ve had four extra vacation days already this month! The best thing I can think of about February is that there is only one month like it in the whole year. Actually there are a couple of other good things… First it is [...]

Pat’s Bits & Pieces- No signs of spring yet!!

Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent Our winter cold snap is continuing with only a couple brief forays by the mercury up into the 30s over the past two weeks. The thermometer keeps flirting with zero, making it hard for me to justify a trip anywhere outside of this house… Although it hardly ever happens, the Tobacco, just upstream from our bridge is frozen over for about 30 feet, the second time already this winter. It has been cold. Guess we are getting paid back for a mild winter last year, early spring, and a long warm fall. One positive note is [...]

Pat’s Bits & Pieces- Waterfront — all around us

Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent Over the years, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has said more than once that March is the most changeable month. Normally I would agree with that, but not this year, when January has been, for lack of a better description, an “interesting” month. We have had warm weather, over 60 degrees in fact, sunny days (quite a few) seasoned with occasional snowstorms, followed by high winds and rain, then frigid (single digit) weather in the past couple of weeks, more rain, a thunderstorm or two and now spring flooding, with another cold snap expected before the end [...]
