Pat’s Bits & Pieces- February again already?
Wasn’t I just complaining about cold weather? Well forget that! Now we have cold weather with that thermometer dipping into the negative numbers for a real J-J-January chill! And now February is only one short week away. Wasn’t it just February a few short months ago? Well folks, like a bad check, it’s back again. Never mind what the calendar says, February is the longest, most drawn out, month of the whole year. And if this keeps up, it will also be the absolute coldest month too. This time of year, there are always 48 hours in the day and [...]

Finally, a good week!
Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent I am almost afraid to say it, or rather write it, for fear that it will jinx us, but things have been going pretty well around the Maurer household for a change. That’s not typical lately as since the holidays, we have had more than our share of Murphy’s Law, meaning “If anything can go wrong it will…” It started with a couple versions of the flu, which ten out of 14 family members got to experience after Christmas and New Year’s. Oh Joy… We aren’t alone there. I have heard many, many stories about people [...]

Pat’s Bits & Pieces– A little ‘smoky’ excitement
by Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent Usually January is a mostly quiet uneventful month. It is too cold (by my standards) to spend time outside, it gets light late and dark early and my favorite place is next to the fireplace in the office. Not so today. My home office has become a “mobile” office this week as I have confiscated the laptop and moved into a warmer section of the house temporarily. My little fireplace is “out” and the furnace is now getting a workout. Moving up into the living room is also helping to reduce the smell [...]

Holiday’s over, winter’s here again
Cold weather, snow flurries, dark at 4:30 p.m.? It must be January again. Welcome to 2013, hopefully a better and more prosperous year for all of us. The world didn’t end – who knew the Mayan Calendar was a circle? We must just be starting over again. The U.S. budget didn’t commit suicide on the “fiscal cliff.” Who made up those buzz words anyway? I want you to know I have got them on my own list of most forgettable stuff for 2012. For the Maurer clan, the end of ‘12 and the beginning of ‘13 will be remembered as [...]

Resolution time — again
Yes Al, I am writing about New Year’s Resolutions again, and no, it isn’t the same column as last year…just similar. After all these years, I’ve already written about most things at least once or twice anyway. Once again another year is winding to a close. That just doesn’t seem possible. It just started a little while ago and now it is over again. With the end of the year eminent, I have been re-reading some of my old resolutions, since I didn’t make any at all last year. Usually one of mine is to get the Christmas shopping – [...]
