Mike’s Musings- 273 pound loss makes the impossible, possible

Michael Wilcox, Publish/Editor   Frankly, I get embarrassed sometimes when our front page is all doom and gloom. For instance last week we had stories on The Remedy Restaurant burning to the ground, three arrested in Lake for meth and a Farwell couple facing CSC and kiddie porn charges. I suppose that’s what people like to read. We hear endlessly how local stores run out of the most recent edition by end of day Friday. That’s good for us, but I’m not sure is an accurate depiction of the wonderful communities we serve. Instead of writing about the horrors of [...]

Mike’s Musings- The joys of dog ownership

Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor Oh to be a dog owner- now twice over. That’s right! Yours truly with strong encouragement from the wife, decided to take on another Labrador Retriever- this one a chocolate lab. We were kinda sorta looking anyways. We made it a point to drive through Jay’s Sporting Goods parking lot each Saturday to see what kind of puppies were available, and what they were priced at. Although there were all shapes, sizes and colors, we had too many excuses as to why we shouldn’t own a second dog. Then came the Irish Festival. Damn those Irish. Maybe [...]

Mike’s Musings- Coffee scorches my butt

Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor I knew it was not going to be the greatest day, when while driving to work, I scorched my butt. Yup you heard it right. Driving down 127, I have the steering wheel firmly gripped in my left hand, and with my right I go to reach for my coffee which was in the beverage holder right next to me. Bam, I didn’t get a good grip and the scorching hot coffee spills out of the cup down into my seat. Essentially there was nothing I could do. My speed was 80 (yes officer I drive a [...]

Mike’s Musings- Funds for Evart airport make no sense

Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor I remember going by this sizeable airstrip in the small town of Evart a few years back. At the time I thought “wow, how does this small town have such a large airport?” The 3800 foot runway, built to handle cargo planes is impressive. I was alerted the other day about an article in CAPCON, ie. Michigan Capitol Confidential, that says the Evart Municipal Airport receives a federal subsidy of $150,000 a year to operate the airport. No big deal I thought until I learned that the Evart Municipal Airport has no hangars, no available fuel, no [...]

Mike’s Musings- Clare girls deserve accolades, Bloomberg disdain

Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor Well done, Clare Girls’ Basketball Team. They finished the season on Tuesday night, only two points short of the Class B semi-finals. Only their second loss of the season it was heartbreaker, 58-57. Clare was ahead most of the game- even up by 10 entering the fourth quarter, but somehow, Midland Bullock Creek was able take the lead when it counted, and now will march on to face Flint Powers. Clare accomplished what no other Jack Pine team has done- going all the way to the state quarterfinals. They weren’t big as far as basketball teams go. [...]
