Mike’s Musings- Lewis no hero of mine
Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor Baltimore Ravens 24 – San Francisco 21 Take it to the bank. The Ravens will be victorious in the Harbaugh bowl. Big brother John will out coach little brother, Jim, to win his first Super Bowl. And, one mighty fine linebacker will call it quits after his final victory. Millions of youngsters have grown up with Ray Lewis on a pedestal. The man has played the most violent of football positions for seventeen years better than anyone- better than Dick Butkus…better than Bronco Nagurski. He will be in the Hall of Fame quicker than temperatures rise to [...]

Mike’s Musings- Mentally challenged don’t need access to guns
Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor What in the heck is going on around here. Within one week’s time, two deranged males have kidnapped and sexually assaulted females- one which brought a lot of attention nationally and another that occurred less than 50 miles away in Gladwin County. The former has been well documented. CMU student is leaving the student activities center, forced into vehicle then raped. She escapes, crazy dude tries to burn down house she escaped to, and then ends up in Gaylord, where he hot wires a garbage truck and starts ramming police cars, before he’s finally shot to death. [...]

Gun control won’t solve crime
Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor I’m opposed to gun control. I’m tired of the federal government meddling in my business. I don’t own a gun, nor do I shoot them, but I don’t want some federal agency telling me I can’t. The most violent country in Europe is England. Violent crime has more than doubled in incidents there from 1988 to the present. Statistically it is more violent than the United States, and most countries in South America and Africa. England has very strict gun control laws. Yet, violent continues to go up. Imagine that! Study after study, reveals very little relationship [...]

Mike’s Musings–A bi-partisan Congress must deal with
by Michael Wilcox, Publisher/Editor Back in July of last year, our congressman, Dave Camp (R-Midland) warned me of the impending fiscal cliff. As we were talking about issues that would affect you and I, at a meeting at the newspaper offices he stated, ” Mike, the biggest issue of all is about to unfold at the end of the year, if Congress doesn’t act.” I blew it off as political poppycock. I figured the venerable Congressman, who was being treated for cancer at the time, was out of touch, or too high on drugs, to know what he was talking about. [...]

Stranded not once, but twice
Geez a couple of weeks ago I had thought I’d fallen off my own fiscal cliff. Well my own personal cliff didn’t have anything to do with money or taxes, but I really did worry a whole lot about my safety. It was a Sunday. Predictably the weather was bad. I was heading to the Detroit area to return my 11-year-old son, who had spent the weekend with us. Since the roads were slick and expected to get worse, I decided to drive my older, 4-wheel drive truck. After all I didn’t want to slide off the road and put [...]
