Youngster’s death spawns thousands of good deeds
Jeez, maybe the Mayans were right, but their calendar was a few months off. After reading about the twenty, six and seven year old students and six teachers gunned down by a crazy man in Connecticut I began to wonder. Then on the heal of that tragedy, the idiot that set fire to his house in upstate New York, so that he could gun down firefighters and policemen- I really began to wonder. “What the heck is wrong with this world?” Then I remembered Jayden Lamb. His death (God rest his soul) provided the most memorable holiday story for me. [...]

Let’s not forget those that are close to our hearts
As many of us are about ready to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s it is time to reflect on 2012 and some of the major events that took place. Just a few days ago it was Sandy Hook, where a deranged 20-year-old decided to kill 27 people, 20 of them children six and seven years of age. Although my child is a little older- 11 to be exact, he is still in an elementary school- 6th grade, and I can’t imagine this type of tragedy occurring at his school. I can’t imagine losing my very bright, thoughtful Jordan. Just a [...]

Let’s give “Right to Work” a chance to work
My family held its Christmas last weekend. My four siblings, their spouses and their kids and grandkids all congregated at the assisted living home where my mother (bless her soul) now lives with Alzheimers. It is probably good that she can’t remember much, because the party ended in a heated discussion about Michigan’s transition to a “right to work” state. Made up of mostly teachers and cops, my siblings and their children were strongly divided on this issue- just like most of the voters in Michigan, I presume. My wife and I, had opposing viewpoints. Heck, one brother-in-law was really [...]

Jody fights back after Stage 4 diagnosis
Like everyone else trying to make it in this sometimes cruel world, I know of many friends and family members that have had to fight off cancer of one form or another. Let’s face it, over the last fifty years there has been no deadlier killer than CANCER. Last year alone 260,000 Americans died of cancer. Another 650,000 were diagnosed with the dreaded disease. Amazingly 1 out of every 2 males will get cancer, whether it be prostrate, or pancreatic; lung or liver. One out of every three females will suffer from one form of cancer or another. Just a [...]

The ultimate threat- a Colt 45 to the side of my head
In my over thirty years as a journalist I have covered my share of crazy stories. It never ceases to amaze me, however, the reaction of some people to those stories. Just last week I wrote about a Farwell man who was charged for attempted murder after he shot at a truck and its passengers who were “turfing” his yard. I don’t know if it was the alleged shooter, or a friend, but the day the paper came out I got a threatening phone call telling me to write a retraction or harm was going to be done to me. [...]
