It’s Greek to me…
The media from talk radio to the New York Times has chewed the Obamacare opinion like a dog with a steak bone. Legal commentators have examined it from all angles along with the motives of Chief Justice John Roberts and seem to arrived at somewhere, but nobodies quite sure where. It’s basic finding: Obamacare is a tax increase and not forced purchase of insurance under the authority of the Commerce Clause is easy enough to understand, even if it is a legal stretch. What has the media buzzing is Justice Roberts. Ostensibly a Conservative, and thus vilified by Liberals before [...]

Who’s getting bullied?
Something bad is coming in the criminal justice system that’s going to affect you or your kids. It’s coming in disguise like a Trojan Horse, and like a Trojan Horse you’re going to welcome it as a good idea. Then you’re going to find out just how bad a law prohibiting bullying really is. “Bullying” is the current legal fad. It got its start when Gay kids were committing suicide and the parents needed to find a reason that didn’t in some way place the blame on them. Bullying fits the bill perfectly! Whatever someone does, unless they’re an adult, [...]

Buenos Dias!
Like most of you, I’m a mix of Liberal and Conservative. Mostly Conservative since I think they’re right on issues more than Liberals. I’ve found that if you want to figure out what Liberals think on any issue you have to imagine what a 22 year old college student thinks would freak out their dad. Whatever it is, that’s the Liberal position. I still marvel at TV commercials for Michigan Casinos. The people shown are young, beautiful, laughing and having a lot of fun gambling…make that “gaming.” Gambling is so downscale, don’t you think? When you go to a casino [...]

Daisy’s loose-again
Well the Harrison Lions Clubs’ mascot, Daisy, got out of her cage again and headed for, you guessed it, Budd Lake. This makes the second time Daisy has gotten loose and caused problems. Daisy is a 12’ American alligator that has been a mascot for the Lions since 1998. She was brought to Harrison by Ronald “stumpy” Rollins who had captured her near Fort Meyers, Florida. Stumpy, who got his name after an unfortunate encounter with a snapping turtle, brought her back and presented her to the Lions Club where she has delighted children and club members every since. “We [...]

Making Law
In the legal world “making law” refers to a case that creates, expands, or changes existing law. Sometimes these are cases having huge significance, like Roe v. Wade or Brown v. Board of Education. The vast majority however are cases nobody has ever heard of that change or expand an existing law or principal. A lawyer can have entire career and never have a case like that. I’ve had one, and it involved Rick Miller, a current candidate for Sherriff, and a guy named Richard Ora Hale. Back in 1979 I was Clare County Prosecuting Attorney. Rick Miller, who retired [...]
