Inexperienced BOR denies tax reduction request

Dear Editor, This letter is in reference to the Tax Review Boards that are held every year after receiving your property tax assessment. On March 12, 2013, I attended one of these for Grant Township on the second day of the reviews and I was only the 22nd person to show up. The Board of Review consists of inexperienced individuals, without even an assessor present. I protested three properties, and all the review board members would say was well you know this is GrantTownship, and denied all of them based on “insufficient documentation”. The two parcels (015-018-101-05 & 06) are [...]

Appreciates column

Dear Mike: My name is Theresa Borawski, the woman who lost 275 + pounds. I wanted to write to THANK YOU for your comments in this week’s edition of Mike’s Musings. To say that I was both honored and humbled is an understatement! I appreciate you sharing my story, first in February, then again this past weekend. It truly has been an incredible journey, a miracle if you will, and I grateful to God for all of it. I am glad to hear that you were inspired; it is for that reason alone that I am so willing to share [...]

Dear Editor: Don’t you stop and think at times, especially when you’re paying your taxes what it would be like to be free? Not just freedom of choice, but freedom from a government that seems to be so out of control that it boggles the most simple of minds. It starts to seem that government has its hands in every aspect of your life, and most of the time where they do not belong. Think about this for a moment. How hard is it to be free? How much better would life be? Lets take some examples of freedom shall [...]

Officials jaywalking sets bad example

Dear Editor: As a long time resident of Clare I am happy to see that Cops & Doughnuts is doing well. Never was this clearer then when I waited in line with my in-laws during the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. Unfortunately, this increase in business has come with a major cost to the safety of Clare citizens. As I drive through town daily I am shocked and disappointed by the number of jaywalkers emanating from this business. On Wednesday (04/10/13) the magnitude of this issue came into sharp focus. As I stopped at the light between the Doherty Hotel and [...]

Teacher quits, fed up with Farwell Schools

Dear Editor, Who is looking out for our Farwell students’ education? The average second grade classroom in Michigan should be 25 students per room. Farwell second grade classrooms have approximately 33, 33, 19 and 19 students in each. The two classrooms that have 19 per room are the students being taught Chinese. Add that up and divide by 4. Hmm 26; now that sounds a little better per classroom doesn’t it? Oh, did I mention that the classrooms teaching Chinese have Aides for twice as long if not longer than the other classrooms? An excellent second grade teacher, Mrs. Marshall, [...]
