Officials jaywalking sets bad example

Dear Editor: As a long time resident of Clare I am happy to see that Cops & Doughnuts is doing well. Never was this clearer then when I waited in line with my in-laws during the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. Unfortunately, this increase in business has come with a major cost to the safety of Clare citizens. As I drive through town daily I am shocked and disappointed by the number of jaywalkers emanating from this business. On Wednesday (04/10/13) the magnitude of this issue came into sharp focus. As I stopped at the light between the Doherty Hotel and [...]

Teacher quits, fed up with Farwell Schools

Dear Editor, Who is looking out for our Farwell students’ education? The average second grade classroom in Michigan should be 25 students per room. Farwell second grade classrooms have approximately 33, 33, 19 and 19 students in each. The two classrooms that have 19 per room are the students being taught Chinese. Add that up and divide by 4. Hmm 26; now that sounds a little better per classroom doesn’t it? Oh, did I mention that the classrooms teaching Chinese have Aides for twice as long if not longer than the other classrooms? An excellent second grade teacher, Mrs. Marshall, [...]

Clare and Gladwin Counties recognize the importance of early childhood

Dear Editor: It is appropriate that during April, the Month of the Young Child, that the Clare-Gladwin Great Start Collaborative can share the findings of the recently released report entitled, “Evaluation of the Great Start Initiative.” The report shows that in Clare and Gladwin Counties, community support for early childhood issues has grown from 16.2% in 2010 to 61.3% in 2012. The need for more investment in early childhood is clear. One in three Michigan children enter kindergarten with previously unidentified health, social-emotional, developmental or learning problems, all of which can lead to poor academic achievement and limited opportunities. The [...]

Job protection for elected, not for us

Dear Editor: How is it that your elected elite have job protection in this state, when the state legislators passed the right work law? You can be fired at any given time your employer chooses. Yet your elected officials have protection from their employer (you the tax payer). At the same time they voted for and passed the right to work law, they put a law through that protects them from recall in the first 6 months and the last 6 months of a state Representative’s term of office. State representatives are elected for 2 year terms. Your state senator [...]

Tom, Tom, Tom

Dear Editor: First we have the freedom of speech, and second we have the freedom of the press. I find you fascinating Tom, for a man that professes to have only the best interest of the community at heart, and then tries to intimidate people in/through the press and squash their voices. Yes Tom there are people that may write letters just to be malicious and most people that read them, can figure it out. Then there are good honest hard working people, who are afraid of reprisal, intimidation, name calling, and general bully type tactics much like in your [...]
