A barn at the Jim and Christine Shuster residence at 6531 East Surrey Road was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon. Clare Fire Chief Jim Chapman said the department received the call reporting smoke coming from the building around 2:17 p.m. When firemen arrived on the scene they saw flames on west side of the barn. “Shortly after that it was fully involved,” Chapman said. By Pat Maurer Correspondent At their monthly meeting Tuesday, the Surrey Township Board passed two resolutions, the first requiring rental unit owners, or their agents, to register each rental property in the township. The property owners will have 60 days to comply with the ordinance after it becomes effective. The ordinance will take effect 30 days after it is published. The registration would be a one-time requirement. The second resolution established a one-time fee to register rental properties at $10 each to cover bookkeeping costs. Mid Michigan Community College has recently hired Matt Rodenbo as the Laker’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Rodenbo, a high school social studies teacher for Clare Public Schools, currently coaches Clare’s varsity girls’ basketball team. He graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education and later earned a master’s degree in Educational Leadership. “Matt is a longtime educator who has experience as a teacher, administrator and coach. By Pat Maurer Correspondent Detective Lt. Mike Coon, with the Clare County Sheriff’s Department for more than 30 years, submitted his resignation January 30th. Undersheriff Dwayne Miedzianowski said he resigned late Thursday morning from the department. No reason was given for his resignation. Clare County Prosecutor Michelle Ambrozaitis said she learned of his resignation when the Sheriff’s Department sent her a memo. “I received the message that he had resigned and the department ‘wished him well’,” she said.
