Get out of Afghanistan now

As the masterful orator – speaking of President Obama- prepares his speech for the United Nations General Assembly- a speech that debunks the idea that the yet unrecognized Palestinean state be allowed a seat in the General Assembly, I can only think about one thing- at that one thing is our men in Afghanistan.

My daddy always warned me that those that make great speeches, are usually more talk than action. Obama is certainly a prime example of this. I’ve never heard a better talker. He can impress any audience. But in the end, he never does what he says he’s going to do.

Prime example is Afghanistan. Obama told us over and over during his last run for the presidency and the first few years he was president, our troops were coming home. We still have thousands of soldiers there. I ask why? There is no strategic value in a land that has yet to see the 20th Century, let alone the 21st. They have been fighting for centuries, and no one – PLEASE READ THIS, no one has beaten them.

Heck the Russians lost thousands of soldiers, spent billions, were there for 20 years, and finally retreated with their tails between their legs.

I am convinced no one can unseat the Taliban. In a largely feudal society, the Taliban exist because they help the farmers to sell their main crop- heroin. Without heroin, Afghan farmers would have nothing. After all you can grow very little in the rocky, hilly terrain that dominates Afghanistan.

Why our leaders, in all their wisdom, think we can accomplish more than the Russians, is mindboggling. In the beginning, 10 years ago- YES, IT’S BEEN 10 YEARS, our mission was to get Osama Bin Laden. Well we got him- why are we still there?

Why are we in a country where the general populace could care less whether they have a democratic government or not. Do you think Hamid Karzai, the former California restaurant dishwasher, who is now president, commands more respect than the Taliban leaders?

Heck, his predecessor was gunned down this week at home. That’s right, the former president who in Karzai’s government was charged with trying to negotiate peace with The Taliban, got his own peace- a one way trip to heaven.

Trust me, it is not getting better in Afghanistan. It is getting worse. It was just last week that brazen Taliban operatives, engineered a three-prong attack in different sections of Kabul, including the U.S. Embassy. No one got hurt, but for a period of time the embassy was under gunfire and everyone had to be evacuated.

President Obama needs to stop talking and start doing. Bring our soldiers home like you promised. We have no real strategic reason to be in Afghanistan. Our soldiers should be trained to fight in other world hotspots where there are REAL strategic reasons to be involved. Let Afghanistan be.
