Mike’s Musings– Got a Christmas Wish? We might help

December 6, 2013

Update: Hurry hurry, deadline is fast approaching. We must receive your letter by December 13, if you want to be considered as a Christmas Wish recipient. We will take the persons or families that we consider the neediest, and provide them with food, clothing and money to help them get thru this winter.

So far, we’ve receive letters from families seeking housing, transportation and Christmas gifts for their children. We certainly will provide the Christmas gifts- I’m not sure about housing and transportation those items may or may not be beyond our means, depending upon how much support we get from area businesses.

As a reminder, the Clare County REVIEW and Marion PRESS are in the midst of their Christmas Wish program. We are asking those that find themselves or family in a dire situation- like no heat, or shelter, or food, or clothes, to write us a letter and explain in graphic detail why you need help.

We in turn will take the best letters to area businesses, who will provide money and donations to see that your Christmas Wish is fulfilled. We’ve helped literally hundreds of families in the past, and it is our intention this year, to help more people and families than in any year since the inception of the program.

Those letters in the past have motivated us to find an apartment for a homeless couple, purchase a gravestone for a distraught wife, provide a vehicle and gas money for a family to travel downstate for Christmas; as well as provide countless dinners, articles of clothing and thousands of toys for children in our communities.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the letters we received this week:

“It’s been hard on us these last several months with me unemployed and seeking work (writer has two kids, 13 and 6, and just moved to Harrison from Detroit area. I had to use what was left of my tax refund to pay bills. I now have $42.03 to my name. I have food stamps but they will be cut off by the end of this month.”

“I tried to get unemployment but my ex-employer fought it. I also tried to get child support from their dad but the Court said that because he was on SSD, that he didn’t have to pay. Where we are currently staying, we have to be out
because my mom can’t have anyone living in here one bedroom apartment or she will be evicted.”

“I certainly would like a job to pay bills, a car, a home we can call our own, BUT most importantly I would like to be able to get my boy something for Christmas. I would also like to wish a merry Christmas to all.”

This person wrote a five page letter detailing her family’s desperate situation, yet despite that situation, she cared enough to wish us all a great holiday. Hopefully we will be able to fulfill some of her needs, as well as those of many other families.

If you, a loved one, or a friend has had a particular rough year and one like to make your holiday season a little more cheerful give us a shout by writing a letter and sending it to the Clare County REVIEW at 105 W. Fourth St., Clare, Mi. 48617, or email to info@ clarecountyreview.com OR The Marion PRESS at Box D, Marion, Mi. 49665, or email yourmarionpress@gmail.com. Deadline for all letters is December 12.
