Mike’s Musings- Things that bother me……

March 8, 2013

1] I was all set to write another column ripping our lawmakers, including the president over this Sequester, or lack of Sequester deal, when it came and went, and now I’m kinda thinking it was a good thing that a deal was not struck. I don’t think the automatic federal cuts will hurt us nearly as bad as our lawmakers and the President wants us to believe. In fact, for all of us that want a reduced federal budget, Sequester, at least for now, accomplished that.

2] I will however rip Washington D.C. for closing all federal offices, schools, legislative sessions, etc etc. on Wednesday, and probably for the rest of the week because a snow storm is headed their way. On Tuesday night, yes I’m writing Tuesday, our powerful lawmakers were frantically scheduling flights to get out of town. Let’s see, that means they worked two days, and were going to take 3 days off- all because snow was headed their way. The word “pansy” comes to mind.

3] I wonder about our President, sometimes. Last week he decided he was going to tell our Supreme Court, they ought to overturn Proposition 8 in California. Voters in that State decidedly voted in favor of Prop 8, which means the State won’t allow gay marriages. Apparently Obama thinks he knows better than the majority of voters, and has asked the Court to call the proposition and resulting vote, unconstitutional. What a crock.

4] And then Obama again, in an act of pettiness, has decided to close the White House to visitors- at least visitors Congressmen invite. This is near and dear to my heart. In my very early years I worked for a Michigan congressman in Washington. I was responsible for handing out White House visits to the Congressman’s constituents. It was a big perk. Tradition for God knows how long, was to allot so many visits per lawmaker. Now Obama has said there will be no more visits because he has to make cuts at the White House. The flipside is that the President is punishing lawmakers for not going along with his Sequester proposals.

A friend sent me this suggestion. It makes complete sense in a sadistic sort of way:

You’re a sick senior citizen and the government says there is no government-funded nursing home available to you. So what do you do? Our plan gives anyone over 65, a gun and 4 bullets. You are allowed to shoot four politicians.

Of course this means you will be sent to prison where you will get three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating, air conditioning and all the health care you need. Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a new hip, knees, kidney, lungs or heart? They’re all covered 100%.

As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you as often as they do now.

And who will be paying for all of this? It’s the same government that just told you they cannot afford for you to go into a home. And you can get rid of four useless politicians while you are at it. Plus, and because you are a prisoner, you don’t have to pay any income tax.

Finally I would like to quote from one of my favorite political satirists, Ben Stein:

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured…., but not everyone must prove they are a citizen.

And now, any of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens.

I couldn’t have written it better.

Maybe it’s a good thing Washington has closed for the snowstorm.
