One thing leads to another…

As the current school year concludes, we’re planning tirelessly for the 2018-2019 school year as well. Getting the right people in the right places is essential for us

to improve student success inside and outside the classroom. Pioneers never rest.

As a result of correspondence from the Michigan Department of Education in February, we will be staffing our primary school library with a certified teacher (librarian) beginning next fall. The recent memo indicates MDE plans to start enforcing library oversight by a certified teacher, and charging penalties for those who don’t. Clare is fortunate in that we had a teacher certified for and willing to serve as our librarian. It also strengthens our schedule for our youngest Pioneers in terms of regular “specials” classes and provides appropriate preparation time for our teachers. We have already hired the new teacher necessary at CHS after transferring our Library Media Specialist.

Paraprofessional support for students will remain virtually the same as the current year, as we are planning for over 98% of the current hours of student support to remain in place. And we are in the process of filling several positions across the district that are open due to retirement or resignations.

We continue to offer the lowest class size in the RESD, and in many cases among schools regionally. At this time, Primary School classes will average 25 students per class. “Average” can be misleading, however, and we would want you to note that each class of students (thinking in terms of the graduating class, ex. Class of 2030) varies due to its enrollment number. At this time, we anticipate all our classes in the elementary will have less than 30 students.

Many of you are hearing about changes across the district. Change is hard…new ideas abound, but it is escaping from old ideas or paradigms that is never easy.

Our task is to earn great relationships with our students, and leverage them for increased achievement and raising the odds for their future success. We are proud of our ability to maintain very reasonable, if not perfect, class sizes across the district. We’re also proud of our staff and the support they give to students. And we can’t bow to the work ahead. Great relationships, great effort, and a focus on improvement are all part of what makes Clare a great place to live and learn!
