The Clare County Arts Council proudly presents Kim Ott-Gray Artist of the Month for April. She is displaying her art in the Chemical Bank of Clare. For many years, you may have known Kim as a dentist, having her own practice with a full staff in Mt. Pleasant. This was her chosen career. Then tragedy struck. Kim had a brain tumor. It caused her to lose her ability to be a dentist and she had to give up her practice. After months and months of therapy, Kim accepted the fact she would never be able to regain the skills needed to be a dentist. Then one day someone suggested she try painting, become an artist. Of course Kim thought this was totally absurd but she decided to take a workshop with a visiting artist/teacher from California. Why not, she had nothing to lose. Her first painting shocked everyone who saw it including Kim. She was good. She was more than good; she was a natural, grasping the concepts of light and shadow, turning form into shape into detail.
That was the beginning of a very successful career in painting. Her work is delicate, exacting and realistic. She paints from the heart. Kim has won many awards in her five years of painting and shown in numerous group shows. She took Best of Show at Art Reach of Mid-Michigan in 2008, group show in 2009 at the Isabella County Fair,
the Mid Michigan Community College group show in 2010, 515 Gallery in Clare 2011, Flint Institute of Art Museum 2012 and in 2012, Kim was in the top 100 artists of 1,517 artists worldwide at Art Prize in Grand Rapids.
Be sure to take some time to appreciate this woman’s remarkable accomplishment. She will be showing oils, pastels, and batiks in a variety of subjects, flying ducks, a fox, a bear, florals and landscapes. Both originals and giclees are on display through the month of April at the Chemical Bank, 803 Mc McEwan Street, Clare, Michigan.
There will be a reception at the Chemical Bank on Friday, April 19th from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Coffee and donuts will be served and Kim will give away a surprise gift to a lucky attendee. Kim will do a drawing at 3:00 pm, giving away 4 or 5 small art prizes.
