A tour of the Clare Fire Department, meeting firemen and even a ride on a fire truck highlighted Fire Prevention Week in Clare this week.
Fire Prevention Officer Chad Michels organized the events with visits to the department from Kindergarten classes on Monday, First through Fourth graders on Wednesday and visits to four area Amish schools on Thursday.
Michels said Fire Prevention Week was declared across the U.S. in 1922 by President Woodrow Wilson to remember the October 9 (1871) anniversary of the great Chicago fire, when, according to legend, Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern and started the blaze that destroyed 17,400 structures and killed 250 people, leaving 110,000 homeless.
He also reminded everyone that it is time to check and change batteries in smoke detectors this week.
