The City of Clare has completed the reroof of the Clare Railroad Depot. Contractor, Bob Meister of Design Builders and employees from the Clare Department of Public Works completed the project on Monday, October 10, 2011. The new roof will help to protect the building’s interior while the Clare Railroad Depot Steering Committee continues to raise funds for restoration of Clare’s historic railroad depot. The depot which resides on railroad property will be moved to Fourth Street, across the street from City Park and Clare Castle Senior Housing. The restoration process has been carefully planned to retain the historical integrity of the depot while preparing it for public use.
The railroad depot restoration project is expected to gain momentum over the next year. Much of the project is still in the planning stage so more information will become available as the project progresses. It is expected that the historic depot will attract railroad enthusiasts and increase tourism to downtown Clare. Citizens and interested parties are encouraged to come to the meetings which are held on the second Wednesday of the month at Clare City Hall and get behind the project. Its success will be heavily dependent on volunteers and contributions of the community. The City has had great success in the past with community involvement and expects a strong turnout toward completing the project.
