The Clare varsity wrestling team competed at the Lakeview Invitational on Saturday, and went 2-3 on the day despite voiding five weight classes.
“Overall, we wrestled fairly well as a team,” Clare head coach Kyle McKay said. “Overcoming a 30 point deficit before you even start the match is a touch obstacle to maneuver. Clare’s wrestlers went out there and stuck their nose right in the thick of things and pulled out as many individual wins as possible.”
The Pioneers fell to Cedar Springs 46-28 in their opening match before picking up a 42-20 win over Morley Stanwood and 39-30 win over Farwell. Montabella topped Clare 46-34 with the Pioneer’s day ending with a 42-39 loss to Lakeview.
Dominik Herkel (152) went 5-0 on the day, Tyler Orwing (215) went 4-1, with Logan Emery going 4-0 at 160 and 0-1 at 171. Jack Langworthy (140) and Eric Litke (145) also went 4-1. Michael Evers (112), Brenden Hensley (189) and Bob Green (285) all went 3-2 with Evan Sved (171) going 2-1 and Steven Bentley (171) going 1-1.
Clare competes next on Jan. 23, hosting Jack Pine Conference foe Meridian.
Farwell went 3-2 on the day, picking up a 51-21 win in its first match of the day. The Eagles followed that up with a 40-32 loss to Montabella and a 39-30 setback to Clare. Farwell ended the day with a 43-24 win over Cedar Springs and a 57-6 win over Morley Stanwood.
Undefeated wrestlers for the Eagles were Brenden Smith (119) and Quincy Crawford (130), both going 5-0 on the day.
