Hydro 411 brings the ‘green’ to Clare

You don’t need a “green thumb” to be a master of home gardening if you have “the right stuff.”

And a brand new business in Clare – Hydro 411 – has all of the right stuff for you, exactly what you need, whether it is for your home garden in the back yard next summer or for an indoor garden you can start right now.

You don’t even need potting soil if you want to try the newest method of hydroponic gardening, or growing your vegetables in nutrient enriched water.

You don’t need a lot of space either. A small hydroponic system can be set up in a three by three foot space; even a closet, and you can grow your own vegetables and herbs in your home. Or, you can set up a large hydroponic garden in your barn in the warmer months or in a heated building. The systems just need a power source, a water source and room temperatures to operate.

Harry Los, who lives near St. Louis and his business partner Chris from Big Rapids just opened the new Clare business, located at 411 Fifth (across from Seiter Lumber) January 4.

The partners are new business people in the area, but not strangers here. Harry has been visiting family in the area for the past 40 years. “We’re looking forward to being productive members of the community,” he said.

Chris grew up nearby, living in Evart for many years. He is working toward a degree in marketing through Ashford University and Harry has a degree in advertising through Michigan State University.

The two met a year ago through their mutual interest in music. They became friends and decided to go into business together. “We get along well,” Chris said. “Harry is a MSU fan and I’m a Wolverine fan so we argue much more about sports than business.”

Mid-winter may seem like a strange time to open a business dedicated to growing garden vegetables and herbs, but Harry and Chris are excited to begin developing Hydro 411 as the area’s “one-stop source for all your indoor hydroponic and soil based gardening needs.”

They handle nutrients, lighting, pest control (they can even order beneficial insects) and all the accessories you need to grow yummy vegetables and herbs. “Organic gardening will be a big focus for us,” Chris said.

In fact they are going to demonstrate just how easy a hydroponic garden can be. They are setting up systems to demonstrate growing techniques right in the store. Chris said they will raise “mostly tomatoes and peppers” to show that you can enjoy fresh, home grown vegetables any time of year. You can use hydroponic systems for just about anything except grains and tubers (underground vegetables like potatoes and carrots). The water has all of the nutrients the plants need. “We will be donating the crops we raise in the store to local programs for needy families,” Harry said.

Hydro 411 is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. They even offer after hours pick-up with a phone call. Their number is 989-941-4157.
