The Clare County Arts Council (CCAC) is again teaming up with Big Brothers/Big sisters (BBBS) in their annual Art Auction to be held March 13 at the Doherty Hotel in Clare at 7pm. BBBS’s Mission statement reads: “To provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” This vibrant organization has been serving Mid Michigan since 1975. Many activities are participated in with a mentor becoming a special friend to these young people. They spend home work time together; go bowling, skiing, attending sports events, waterparks, Mackinaw Island, baking, shopping and fishing. The organization encourages “bigs” to spend time on regular daily routine things like going to the bank or the grocery store. What we may find boring can be a valuable lesson in everyday life experiences to these young people. Think about it.
Several artists will be demonstrating and showing their art in the lobby of the hotel for the auction. Monica Rouech will be demonstrating drawing, Tom Cradit will give you tips on photography and Julie Wells will be working on a mixed media creation using acrylic and oil pastel to create texture. Tracy Fair will be demonstrating how to make her Irish Rose wire rings. The rings will be for sale for $5.00 each with a $1.00 from each sale donated to the auction. She will also donate a piece of jewelry for the auction. Come bid on a hand painted candy dish, an afghan, pendants made from dichotic glass and an animal lovers basket-homemade goodie for your furry friends.
Many local artists of all ages are donating their hand made pieces to the cause. And, new this year, high school students from Clare and Gladwin counties donating work to the auction were invited to compete for prize money. First place $100, second place $50 and third place $25. Photos of the art work are on the BBBS website with winners being chosen by popular vote. Harrison High school has three teams submitting art. Team 1: Dakota Hester, Dann Neph, Sean Bergey. Team two: Sonia Roe and Elora Hartley. Team three: Ashleigh Sanderson, Allyssa Haag and Kara Davis. Ballots will be available the night of the auction and winners announced at the end of this exciting evening.
