Sheriff John Wilson of Clare County received the Jill Gallihugh Outstanding Alumni Award from the Delta College Police Academy during its recent commencement held December 16. It was the 89th Delta College Police Academy graduation. Twenty-four recruits graduated. Commander Jimmy Solomon of the Dearborn Police Department was the keynote speaker.
Wilson had been interested in law enforcement from an early age, starting with Clare County as a cadet when he was in middle school, and working in several capacities until hired in 1989 as a Deputy. Clare County sponsored Wilson through the Delta College Police Academy and he graduated in December of 1989.
Wilson was promoted to Sergeant in 1999, where he was given the responsibilities for IT and grant writing. He was elected to Sheriff in 2009 and currently serves his community by being a member of the United Way Board and the Clare County Community Foundation.
The award was developed in 2005 to showcase an academy graduate who has been a leader in the law enforcement community. It recognizes professional and scholarly achievement, and is presented to a person who has demonstrated a high level of commitment to the welfare of the entire community served by Delta College. Jill Gallihugh retired after 25 years of dedicated service to Delta in 2006, and played an integral part in the success of the academy.
