Love and marriage are masterpieces of God’s creative plan. Two people with different personalities, backgrounds and gifts enter into a love relationship that makes them one. It’s as old as the Garden of Eden, where the first wedding contained words that have been part of marriage ceremonies ever since: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Some marriages are enjoyable. Others are contests of quiet (or very loud) desperation where both husband and wife are trying to somehow endure to the end; sometimes to bitter [...]

Dear Editor, I am writing in response to the February 10th issue of the Review. The front page and Letters to the Editor were loaded with support for accused meth lab operator, Eric Herron, and endless stories of his life’s hardships. I couldn’t help but laugh, as all criminals have a sob story to tell. Even Charles Manson had a pathetic past. And I can’t help but wonder where this support system was when this man “fell in with the wrong crowd”? Everyone wants to blame someone or something else for Eric sitting in jail on drug charges. The hardships [...]

Amidst the presence of two television crews at the Clare County Building on Wednesday, the Independent Citizens for Ambulance & Rescue Efficiency (I.C.A.R.E.) presented a report packet to the County Commissioners during the Public Comment portion of the Board’s regular meeting. When questioned why they were not put on the Board’s agenda as they had requested, Chairperson Don David responded, in part, “You were never on the agenda because I didn’t approve it.” Citizens from seven northern townships within the County and the City of Harrison have, for months, been petitioning Commissioners to wade past questions of responsibilities and legalities [...]

Surrey Township approved a motion to upgrade the radio service and siren located at the transfer station to narrow band for an estimated cost of $1,650, from Pro-Com. The radio towers must all be converted to narrow band before the end of the year, Supervisor Russ Hamilton reported. Pro-Com’s estimate was the lowest of two received, he said. He said the township’s other siren at the fire station would cost approximately $2,490 to convert and still keep it so the fire department can set it off manually. That’s something we can do later, he said. He said they were originally [...]

rancesco Schettino who was Captain of the Costa Concordia when it ran aground in Italy remains under house arrest. He’s charged, or potentially charged, with leaving his ship while the crew and passengers were still aboard. Is it a crime to do so? I’d be surprised if the Italian government didn’t come up with a crime of some sort after the embarrassment caused by the entire incident. That’s the way governments are. Maybe they’ll make it a crime not to go down with your ship. That would be tough to do when your ship doesn’t go down, but just lays [...]

I can’t imagine living my last years with Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately that’s what my mother is experiencing. I would guess she has had it for 7 years. The onset occurred while she was living with my father in Florida. Amazingly none of her five children knew. My father had become her fulltime caregiver, all the while hiding my mother’s condition from friends and family. When he died two years ago, my mother’s condition became worse. We had to place her in a memory care facility in Lansing. Since then it has been a long and torturous ride as she has continued [...]

Grant Township board members agreed Tuesday evening to get estimates to test residential wells that might be affected by pollutants from the Grant Township Dump site, which has been closed since December 31, 1989. Supervisor Dan Dysinger said the direction of the flow of pollution from the old landfill is southwest and between five and ten residential wells in this direction should be tested for VOC (volatile organic compounds) and metals. He said the wells were last tested in 2000. He estimated the testing costs at “around $3,000.” Supervisor Dan Dysinger outlined another proposal as well – a 105 foot [...]

I’ve been getting to know a bunch of new people this year – lab technicians, x-ray technicians, nurses, doctors, receptionists… It has definitely been my year to be poked and prodded. It all started with my 65th birthday. As soon as I was eligible for Medicare, I think my warranty ran out. Little things started popping up. For about a year, I was slowly losing weight, a pound here, a pound there, and, prodded not too gently by the family, I went in for a check- up. A tendency to get bronchitis a couple times every year didn’t help the [...]

A call to the Clare County Sheriff’s Department about two breaking and entering complaints led to the discovery of a rash of 18 similar incidents over the night of February 9 in Clare, Isabella and Gladwin Counties and to the arrest of two men within three days in connection with all of the break-ins. Sheriff John Wilson said he was pleased the results of the joint investigation which quickly led to the arrest of two Clare County men. Samuel Joseph Lueders, 19, of Clare and Robert Wrather Wade, 18, of Farwell were charged in connection with the robbery spree. Sheriff’s [...]
