Abortions are Reduced in states that promote contraception and sexual education

During the thirty years I was a pastor in a conservative Lutheran Church it was zealously anti-abortion then and still is today.  I followed its anti-abortion party line from the time I was at its seminary, convinced of the correctness of its position, believing that the fetus must be protected from conception.

As a leader in the Synod’s anti-abortion organization “Lutherans for Life” I helped to arrange fundraisers, rallies, and presentations at churches to whip up anti-abortion sentiment.  I set aside one Sunday a year for an anti-abortion worship service to indoctrinate and motivate parishioners.  I was present at several of the annual anti-abortion protest rallies held in Washington D.C.

Upon leaving the conservative Lutheran church behind with its pressure to conform to its ridged anti-abortion stance I was able to consider the subject in a more objective manner.  I examined the Pro-Choice position and came to understand that the abortion controversy is not a mere black and white issue.  It is about readily available contraception, women’s reproductive rights, the right to choose, reduction of teen pregnancy, and legitimate sexual education.  I could no longer believe that a clump of cells or fetus must be unconditionally protected. Other considerations must be taken into account such as rape, incest, threat to the mother’s health, and severe fetal deformity.

In addition I could not abide the hypocrisy of a movement that professed concern for unborn fetuses but once born and living in the world ignoring the needs of these children existing in poverty without adequate healthcare, nutrition, and shelter.

In states that provide contraception for all woman regardless of age, like Colorado and Oregon, abortion rates have plummeted because woman are not having as many unwanted pregnancies.  In Colorado and Oregon pharmacists are allowed to write birth control prescriptions.  Also the availability of over the counter morning-after pill in Colorado is another factor.  Also IUDs and condoms are freely available.

In Colorado the birth rate for girls aged 15 to 19 dropped by half over eight years, falling by 59% from 2009 to 2017.  Abortions fell by 60% during those same eight years.  For 40 years Colorado has provided family planning services through clinics for women and men.

Colorado also requires legitimate sexual education for its youth. Young people must be instructed in legitimate sexual education and not the ineffective sexual abstinence dogma.

Rabid Ohio anti-abortion legislators are attempting to pass legislation that would require physicians to re implant an ectopic pregnancy, a procedure that is not possible, or face a murder charge.  Pennsylvania extremist anti-abortion lawmakers are seeking to pass legislation requiring burials for miscarried fetal remains and even blastocysts that never implanted in a uterus, something women or doctors cannot even know.  These states and others are also attacking Planned Parenthood clinics to restrict low cost contraception availability.  It is such states that have higher teen pregnancies.

States that are shutting down Planned Parenthood clinics ought to be making contraception and legitimate sex education readily available if they genuinely want to lower teen pregnancies and the need for abortions.

I just want to make a comment on your piece in the clare county review called the liar in chief in the February 14, 2020 addition. Just to let you know that I find you so offensive and I’ve read your articles before and then I guess I forget about him but this time I wanted to Respond to you. You are so ignorant and stupid and apparently a totally left wing fool . You need to get over the fact that Trump won the election in 2016 and he has done more for this country than any president in my lifetime and I’m in my 60s and start getting yourself ready because he’s going to win again in 2020. All you have running now are a bunch of stupid socialists and we’re not going to socialism and then communism and losing our country. You should be ashamed of yourself for wearing the cover of Reverend before your name. God sees all things and God knows all things brother.Democrats believe in abortions and you as a man of God are a Democrat. Really you reap what you sow!!!
