There seems to be a bit of controversy surrounding a new idea put forth in the Clare community. A group of individuals have started an initiative to improve the Clare School’s athletic facilities and raise enough money for artificial turf as well as other improvements. Another recent letter to the editor lambasted the idea and instead stated that they thought the facilities should be fixed instead of an expensive redo.
I would like to put forth another possibility. Clare is a small community. And many in the city as well as Clare County at large are struggling to pay bills, find employment, feed their children, etc. Go ahead and Google “Kids Count in Michigan.” This is a publication that keeps track of Michigan families and children by county. Using 13 of 15 indicators to rank Michigan counties, Clare, Lake, and Roscommon were the bottom three in the entire state of Michigan.
While it is a nice idea to have state of the art athletic facilities, I think there are bigger, more basic, quality of life issues that need to be addressed. I understand that this a community project, strictly voluntary and all by donation. But maybe the citizens of Clare County could start an initiative to put forth another project –1 million dollars into a scholarship account. Increased access to higher education for our children could lead to lessening poverty for Clare County’s families.
