Barker Rebuttal

November 25, 2019

Dear Editor,
I always read Robert Barker’s column with the question, “What will he come up with next?” His last article did not fail to amuse. I will dispense with his anecdotal stories about going to church in Kentucky and his time at WMU and get right down to brass tracks. Mr. Barker said, “Jesus, was a mortal here on earth who remembered that the divine Christ Spirit is in all peope whether they know it or not or believe it or not.” Mr. Barker must know a different Jesus than I know; the Jesus I now (Jesus of the Bible) said, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condmned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:18-19) Jesus also said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” (John 14:6) So much for the ol’ pie in the sky, unicorns and rainbows view of mankind. Jesus never spent two seconds trying to teach you that the divine Christ Spirit is already in you and all you have to do it find it. The real Jesus and the Jesus of Robert Barker’s mind are not the same person. Mr. Barker also says, “Jesus did not come to be a savior and Lord does not need to be recieved as such into one’s life.” But Jesus said, “… Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7) Jesus also said, “I come not to call the rightous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32) Therein lies the question, “Arey you a siner?” The Bible says you are, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23) Do you know what the next verse says? It does not say look within yourself for the Christ Spirit that has always been there. It says “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:24) So there you have it, you are a sinner and your sin will send you straight to Hell. If you do not want to go there- trust Jesus Christ. You may ask, “Is it that simple?” You think that is God loved you enough to die for you he would make it hard? I, for one, knew I had no “Christ Spirit” in me. I quit looking for it, and trusted the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to keep my soul out of Hell. Why wouldn’t you trust him today? As I have said in previous letters, who are you going to believe? Will you trust the Jesus of the Bible or the Jesus of Mr. Barker’s imagination? “… How long halt ye between two opinions…” (1 Kings 18:21)
