Constitutional rights are being eroded

Dear Editor:

I read an article today reporting that the United Nations is intervening in a “Human Rights” crisis in Detroit.  There is 90 million dollars of unpaid water bills to the City, and many people are having their water and sewer services shut off because they are not paying the bills.  The UN claims that water is a basic human right.  I beg to differ.  Water may be a necessity, but not a “right”, and certainly not “water delivered to your home by City infrastructure”.  This got me thinking about real rights that Americans are guaranteed by the US Constitution, and how these rights are being eroded.

Now, please hear me out.  This is not a Republican issue or a Democrat issue.  This is an American issue, and what is actually occurring is quite disturbing.

Lets looks at a few of our rights that are guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.  One of them being the right to free speech.  Over and over we are seeing instances of where individual rights to free speech are being trampled.  From the veteran who is being threatened with losing his home for flying an American flag (neighbors claim that it is offensive), to the Department of Homeland Security labeling certain Americans as terrorists.  Janet Napolitano, an official appointed by the President of the United States, released a report in 2009 claiming that “domestic right wing” terrorists are likely to be returning war veterans, ardent second amendment supporters, pro-life Christians who might have a Ron Paul bumper sticker.  This describes most of my family and friends.  Perhaps I should go scrape those pro life and Browning stickers off my car.  Chilling effect to say the least.

Another right guaranteed is the freedom of the press.  In February, the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) a regulatory agency whose head is appointed by the President, announced plans to begin observing newsrooms.  With its “Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs,” or CIN, the agency plans to send researchers to grill reporters, editors and station owners about how they decide which stories to run.

The purpose of the CIN, according to the FCC, is to ferret out information from television and radio broadcasters about “the process by which stories are selected” and how often stations cover “critical information needs,” along with “perceived station bias” and “perceived responsiveness to underserved populations.”  Again, a chilling effect on a right guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

In the United States, we also enjoy the freedom of the right to be secure in our persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.  No doubt you have heard of the NSA (National Security Agency) scandal where it has been leaked by Edward Snowden that the Agency is monitoring cell phone calls, text messages, social media, emails and other communications of average American citizens, running these communications through algorithims looking for key words.  I was pretty excited about the pressure cooker I scored at the Amish Auction and communicated to a lot of people about the pressure cooker.  I really needed one to kick the canning up a notch this fall.  I Ihope that coupled with my discussions about being pro life and Christian doesn’t flag me as a domestic terrorist.  I’m sure being the wife of a licensed firearm dealer has me on one of their lists somewhere.

I have chosen to discuss only a few examples of where the rights of the American people are being eroded.  To open a discussion of all 10 of the rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights and provide examples of where they are being threatened, would take up more room in the paper than I think the esteemed Editor of this paper would allocate to me.

Be aware that the agencies that are engaging in these activities are headed by individuals who are appointed by the President, not elected Representatives of congress.  This in of itself is problematic.  How are these agencies gaining so much power over the American people?   And why is the United Nations coming into American soil, to compel the City of Detroit to cease and desist turning water service off to residences that are not paying their bills?   A foreign body, is in the US, attempting to enforce something that they claim is a right….a right to water service provided by the government.  This is alarmingly wrong.  These are issues that all Americans should be very concerned about, should investigate for themselves and make decisions on how many of their freedoms they will continue to give up.
