Disappointed that County will drop MSU

Letters to the Editor graphicTo the Editor:
I am so disappointed with the Clare County Board of commissioners for deciding to cut MSU Extension’s budget.
They have so many valuable programs our community needs.

In particular my heart is broken that one of those programs is Clare County 4-H.

This is a wonderful program that not only provides important life skills to our youth but also encourages them to give back to their community.

4-H is a very long-standing proven program that works to help youth develop into great citizens.

The youth learn by doing, by being active participants working along side one another, adults, volunteers and the community.
I am also disturbed that the plan to make the cuts has been voted on already.

A good board decision would have made prior plans to hear what parents, volunteers, children and the general community feel about their plan to defund MSU-E, especially since it is a program that would impact many 4-H families greatly.

Our community needs this program; many youth will be underserved and miss out on the opportunity to learn how to become great citizens and future volunteers and leaders.

I hope the board of commissioners decides to roll back their decisions after hearing from the community and I hope they understand that 4-H is not just showing animals and winning ribbons.

4-H is a program that teaches responsibility, leadership, citizenship, life skills, service learning and a love for their communities.

Thank You
Sherry Landon
